What is stretch therapy?
Stretch Therapy differs from yoga. Yoga includes asanas (physical postures), pranayama (breathing practises) and meditation, and when practised in its fullest form includeds cleansing practises and codes of conduct (yamas and niyamas). Stretch Therapy does have a link to yoga postures but it is also blended with a modern understanding of anatomy and physiology, as well as the knowledge acquired by Kit Laughlin over the past 25 years through his treatment of many thousands of clients.
Stretch Therapy is a one-on-one consultation that is very useful in a range of applications from rehabilitation of common physical problems like neck, upper and lower back pain, and shoulder, arm and hand problems, through to athletic performance enhancement.
The aim is to create relaxation and flexibility in the body. Conditions such as lower back pain, sciatica, neck pain, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, tension headache, as well as pain in the hip, buttocks, calf, hamstrings, forearms, between the shoulder blades, and in the joints, can all be treated safely and effectively with correct stretching methods.
What occurs when we stretch?
Stretching literally pulls tension out of muscles. When muscles are loosened and relaxed, free movement results and pain often naturally subsides. When in severe pain from of a cramped muscle, our natural reaction is to stretch this pain away. Dull aches, stiffness and soreness are often due to low-level tension in the muscles. Stretching is the best method to relieve this discomfort. It also realigns muscle fibres, releasing knots and massaging scar tissue. Stretching also increases circulation in the muscles and body, leading to the removal of pain-producing toxins such as lactic acid.
